How to Increase Web Traffic Using Free Website Visitors

You might be surprised by how many people have given up on trying to increase their web traffic by attracting free visitors to their website. Instead they rely on buying traffic from sources such as Google Adwords and other PPC, paid ads at websites, buying from redirected domain setups and so on.

Yet, free website traffic is generally much better quality traffic, better targetted traffic, and so more likely to take up whatever you are offering to your visitors. What’s more free web traffic is pretty easy to get!

Free visitors are easier to get than paid visitors, and in a moment I’ll give you the basics of how to get them. First I just want to point out why free website traffic is easier to get than paid traffic. There are two reasons. The first is that in order to buy traffic you have to spend some of your income — income that presumably results from your time, effort and work elsewhere. So you are in effect trading time and effort in other areas of your life for paid web traffic.

Secondly, free website traffic is easier to get because for the same amount of effort that you would put into setting up the buying of traffic you are probably going to get more website visitors. Not just more, but better quality too. So here’s the big question: Why on Earth would anyone want to buy website traffic?

If I had to give an answer it would have to be that they simply don’t realise or understand what I have just laid out above. That and the fact that paid traffic is more immediate. That tiny advantage needs to be offset against the overriding advantages of free web traffic, however.

Anyway, I promised you the basics of how to increase web traffic by bringing free visitors to your site. Here it is, and anyone can do it, it just takes a little time and a little effort (the same amount of effort you would put into buying traffic).

1) You need good content. This means valuable information; something that is going to be useful to your target audience. If you are running a website in a niche you are knowledgeable in or enthusiastic about then you will have that information. Things you take for granted in your subject area will be new information for a large percentage of your visitors. And if you provide your website visitors with useful information they will come back for more, so doubling, tripling, quadrupling your free traffic.

2) You need to optimize your content with the best keywords, so that your target audience can find your pages in the search engines. Use keyword suggestion tools, think “What would I search for if I was going to buy/ subscribe/ join/ whatever-you-want-your-visitors-to-do,” and you won’t go far wrong.

3) Backlinks. You need plenty of backlinks (with suitable anchor text) from high page rank sites. If you have quality content then other sites are more likely to link to you. You can also set up backlinks from many Web 2.0 sites that offer you your own account, as well as do article marketing.

But backlinks need not come just from other sites. If you have lots of content at your site then links from your own pages count too. So you can increase your search engine rankings by ever building a bigger site with good internal linking. You don’t hear about this much but I can attest from my own experience that it works. I once experimented by not getting any external links for 12 months for a website I own, but I built content and internal links. Result, free traffic had more than trebled by the end of the year from roughly 250 visitors per day to over 800 on average.

But the details — how best to do all this stuff to increase web traffic? Obviously it can’t all be answered in one post. That’s about it really. If you’re looking for a solution where you just press a button to get quality free web traffic then you’re going to be disappointed. There are no big secrets (a few little ones, maybe, but no big ones). All the successful sites have good content, good optimization and lots of backlinks from high page rank sites. As getting good free website traffic isn’t difficult, why ever buy traffic again?
