Blog Comments Bring Free Visitors
There’s an interesting post over at FabianTan.com on how to get visitors for free from blog comment posting in the right way (i.e. not spamming!) A useful tip given there is to use an rss reader to keep track of the blogs you want to interact with, which also gives you up to the minute news on new posts at these blogs. One of the blog comments itself also suggests using Google Alerts for the same purpose.
I would add that for blog comments to be most effective — in theory that is, if we were only to follow SEO principles (which we don’t!) — people would have to use the keyword phrase that applies to the web page they are linking to — use it in the link that goes with the blog comment as anchor text, that is. So this would mean entering it into the ‘name’ field. However, some people might not like this at all, and it would certainly look ‘spammy’, even if a comment poster were to add their name at the end of the comment text. So this is certainly not a technique I am advocating — actually the reverse — and merely pointing out what would work best for SEO and its limitations for human web users — as a point for further discussion perhaps.
UPDATE: a few hours later:
There’s a post about using keyword phrases in the ‘name’ field of blog comments (to get the keyword in the anchor text of the link back to your site) here: Should You Put Your Keywords in The Name Field in which the author says it looks spammy, as I mentioned above. But the feeling in the comments there is that it’s sometimes okay, if used in a genuine way by someone having a useful comment, while acknowledging that some people do not like it at all and find it rude.
I think this is the point — it looks rude and spammy, so would not do the comment poster’s reputation any good. Blogs have a different, more friendly relationship between site owner and the visitor/ commentator than traditional websites.
The main thing to consider is why the person making the post is making it, to get backlinks or to make a genuine contribution to the other blog that people will find useful. Using keywords in the name field would tend to suggest the former rather than the latter.
It is worth noting that purely in SEO terms, a link back to your site which doesn’t contain your site’s main keyword phrase but your name instead is not going to be of a lot of use SEO-wise unless your name IS the main keyword phrase of your site. However, human readers, as opposed to search engine spiders, would still be motivated to follow the link if they find the comment useful or inspiring of course.
On the human side, we don’t have to blindly follow SEO dictates but should want to comment useful points on blogs in which we are interested solely in order to be helpful to others.
