Best SEO Web Design Tips: On Page Links

My Best SEO Web Design Tips: On Page Links and Where to Put Them.

Links on web page designs are typically seen in navigation menus, within the main text of the particular page (that which especially makes it different from the other pages at that site) and below that main text, perhaps in a list of resources or at the page foot.

You might imagine that these different positions for links are all as effective as each other. Not so! For both the search engines and human visitors, links as part of the main text on the page work best. This is part of ‘SEO on page optimization’, something that you must be aware of and apply to your website pages.

Best SEO Web Design Tip Summary: The links on your page which you want both search engines and human visitors to pay most attention to must appear as a natural part of the main text that appears on that page, specifically in the central column (if you have three columns) or its equivalent.

Why? In the case of human visitors, they will tend to read the main, central column text first before any other parts of the page. Search engines are also designed to concentrate on that part of the page, and for the very same reason. Let me inintroduce to the concept of Vision-based page segmentation.

Vision-Based Page Segmentation

Vision-based page segmentation first came about as a Microsoft idea in November 2003 and has been adopted to greater or lesser extent since then by the search engines. (See http://research.microsoft.com/research/pubs/view.aspx?tr_id=690)

Vision-based page segmentation uses the idea that viewers of a web page will concentrate mainly on the central section or column, and it is into this central column that the creator of the page will place the most important content. This means that the left-hand navigation column (and any right-hand navigation column) will be given less importance by the search engines.

Consequently, links to other sites placed into the side columns will be given less importance by the search engines than links place into the central content area. In some cases they may even be ignored if in the side columns.

Links in side columns tend in any case to be lists of links without much surrounding text and possibly with reduced anchor text. As the search engines take into account the text surrounding a link, and bearing in mind vision-based page segmentation that favours the central column, it follows that Webmasters should place links that they wish to be properly indexed and given weight to into the central content area. Each such link should be surrounded by appropriate text, and anchor text itself can be a little longer as well as agreeing in subject area with the surrounding text and the rest of the content on the page.

What this means in practice, is that links which appear in context within the body of an article or piece of instructional writing, will be given much greater weight by the search engines than would otherwise be the case, particularly if these links were in the side navigation columns.

So now you know where to place your best links, the ones you most want your visitors to pay attention to, when you are applying SEO web design principles to your web pages.
